Partnership Opportunities

What is the opportunity?

The 22nd TCI Network Global Conference 2019 (known as “TCI 2019”), will be held in Antwerp from October 8-10, 2019. Partners and attendees can expect to connect with 400 regional, national and global leaders from across the cluster ecosystem, including business and government leaders, academia, and cluster organizations who will share learnings and develop business opportunities that will drive economic growth and prosperity.

Two main types of clusters

Highlighting its hosting role, Flanders has pulled out all the stops in strengthening its clusters in recent years. As part of its official cluster policy, the region has launched various innovative business networks. These networks aim to create a dynamic within a group of companies, and are expected to implement a concrete action plan:

  • by fostering intense cooperation between the participating companies;

  • resulting in demonstrable economic added value.

Launched over a year ago, Flanders’ spearhead clusters constitute a second type of cluster in the region. These initiatives boost long-term and cross-sector collaboration projects for enhanced innovation in some of Flanders’ most advanced and promising sectors: chemicals (Catalisti), food (Flanders’FOOD), energy (Flux50), logistics (VIL), sustainable materials (SIM) and blue growth (Blauwe Cluster).

Local clusters with global potential

Putting Flanders’ spearhead clusters on the global map is a key goal of Flanders Investment & Trade, as part of ‘Vlaanderen Versnelt’ or ‘Flanders Accelerates’. This refers to the official internationalization strategy aimed at promoting the region’s global potential in five main domains:

Overview of the spearhead clusters:

TCI 2019 is unique as it offers a different experience each day of the conference:

Day 1 – Experience – Immersive cluster experiences around Antwerp showcasing the active clusters in the Regions, such as Chemicals and Petrochemicals in the Port of Antwerp. This is followed by a welcome reception to foster interactions between attendees.

Day 2/3 – Engage / Exchange – Learning from global experts during a series of plenary sessions (keynotes and panels). This is followed by a conference dinner. Hands-on, interactive sessions with other leaders drawing on the sub-themes of the conference to explore ideas and generate solutions and partnerships. A cluster-matchmaking event will allow you to formally connect with like-cluster leaders from around the world.

Partnering with us will ensure access to the leading experts on cluster development, economic growth, and international trade and provide you with a platform to demonstrate your leadership in cluster development.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity as past conferences have taken place in Toronto, Canada (2018); Bogota, Colombia (2017); Eindhoven, Netherlands (2016); Daegu, South Korea (2015); Monterrey, Mexico (2014); Kolding, Denmark (2013); and Basque Country, Spain (2012).

TCI 2019 explores the theme “Strategic Clusters for Sustainable Growth” and the following four sub-themes:

  • Regional economic development and inclusive prosperity.

  • Mobilizing talent and diversity.

  • Scaling up within a cluster ecosystem.

  • Designing collaborative networks for innovation.

4 broad building blocks have been chosen to structure the dialogue:

  • Cluster organization

  • Cluster for regional growth

  • Cluster partnerships

  • Worldwide clusters

Flanders Investment & Trade

Flanders Investment & Trade – FIT for short – promotes international business in Flanders as a key element of the region’s socioeconomic development. FIT does this by supporting Flandersbased firms in their international ventures and by attracting foreign investors to the region, while providing custom advice, guidance and support in collaboration with Flanders Innovation & Entrepreneurship (VLAIO).

A government agency of Flanders, FIT offers a range of specialized services to companies in Flanders and abroad. Foreign companies that aim to set up business in the region can call on free consultation services regarding all aspects of their investments: from financing and tax incentives to site visits, employee recruitment and networking opportunities. Operating no fewer than 76 offices abroad, Flanders Investment & Trade is well represented around the globe.

Companies reap various rewards when deciding to invest in Flanders. The region’s strategic and central location in Europe, its highly developed infrastructure, its open and welcoming business environment, its innovative clusters and numerous other strengths make Flanders an attractive destination for foreign direct investment. The figures tell the tale – in 2018, foreign investors funneled EUR 4.24 million into Flanders-based activities: twice as much as the year before and the highest amount ever!

The region is also known for the close collaboration between its private, public and academic sectors – ranking as the European #1 for innovation linkages in the European Innovation Scoreboard. All of this makes Flanders fertile ground for innovative R&D activities in some of the most advanced technological niches. A major enabler in this co-creative ecosystem is Flanders’ cluster policy, which facilitates networks of companies and knowledge institutes that boost the competitiveness of various industries. FIT supports these clusters in their internationalization efforts and seeks to attract foreign investors capable of strengthening the clusters’ transformations into major international players.
